What 72 Hour Booking Records Show

A 72 hour booking record covers the first three days after an arrest. Jail staff log the name, date of birth, the charge, the arresting agency, and the booking time. The file may also list bail, the next court date, and the housing unit. Most county jails post a fresh roster on their site each day. The roster updates as people are booked in or released. You will see new names, dropped names, and changes to bail or charges in real time on many of these pages.

Under RCW 70.48.100, the jail register is open to the public. The full inmate file is held in confidence and only goes to criminal justice agencies. The basic booking log is what you can see online. If you need more, you can file a public records request with the sheriff or police chief.

Note: Not every jail posts the same level of detail. Some show booking photos, others do not.

Washington State Patrol Criminal History

The Washington State Patrol holds the central criminal history database for the state. The WSP runs the WATCH system, which lets you search by name and date of birth for $11 per look up. WATCH shows convictions and arrests less than a year old with pending dispositions. It is the fastest way to check for booking and arrest data tied to a person across the whole state.

You can read more about the WSP records section by visiting the WSP Criminal History page.

The DOC system is a key tertiary source when a person moves from a county jail to a state prison after sentencing. The portal is at the DOC Incarcerated Search page.

WASPC Jail Booking System

The Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs runs the Jail Booking and Reporting System, known as JBRS. It is a multi jurisdictional database built under RCW 36.28A.040. JBRS holds booking and release records from all city and county jails in the state, plus DOC. It tracks about 40,000 bookings each month. The system is closed to the public. Only law enforcement and other criminal justice users get access.

For the public version of WASPC info, visit the JBRS overview page.

Court records pair well with jail roster data. The Washington Courts site lets you search Superior and District Court cases by name or case number. It is free to use and covers most counties. After a person is booked, the case shows up in the court system within a day or two. Use the court search to find hearing dates and the next court date.

Public Records Guidance

The Municipal Research and Services Center, MRSC, gives clear guidance on what jail and law enforcement records are open. Their page on law enforcement records is a key starting point if you plan to file a public records request with a sheriff or city police chief. The state Public Records Act, RCW 42.56, sets a five business day window for an agency to respond.

Visit the MRSC law enforcement records page for the rules on booking photos, jail registers, and exempt items.

MRSC also tracks key court rulings on jail data, including the rules around booking photos under RCW 70.48.100(2).

Note: Booking photos as inmate records are not always public. The rule depends on the offense and the agency.

Washington Booking Record Statutes

The state legislature posts every law on its site. The Revised Code of Washington, or RCW, is the official source for the rules that shape jail records and access. The Criminal Records Privacy Act, RCW 10.97, sets the limits on how non conviction data can be shared.

How to Search Local Jail Rosters

Most county sheriffs in Washington post a recent bookings page or a 72 hour list. Some use a third party vendor. Some host the roster on the sheriff site. Others run a full inmate lookup with photo, charge, and bail. King County uses JILS. Pierce County uses LINX. Smaller counties post a daily PDF or a simple table. Pick the county or city below to find the right roster for the area you care about.

The basic data on each roster is the same. Look for the name, the booking date, the charge, the bail, and the next hearing. If you do not see a name on the roster, the person may have been released or moved to a different facility. Call the jail intake desk to confirm.
